2018 favs in no particular order. Some old friends here in Courtney Barnett, Fraser A. Gorman, Franz Ferdinand and Ought, and some great newcomers effectively capturing the mood of the year (and of me, for the most part). There’s Crayola Lectern’s Rescuse Mission (as in there will not be one: “everyone is focused on themselves”); Gruff Rhys (of Super Furry Animals fame) Selfies in the Sunset (“no sliver linings, this is the end/get your phone out to document”); MGMT’s When you Die (“go fuck yourself; you heard me right/will all be laughing with you when you die”); and Essex Green, back after a 10-year absence with Dont Leave it in our Hands (“we can’t hear, we can’t talk, we can’t make audible thoughts/a generation screams—living by netivity”) ; The Love Language’s Independence Day (“how long could you care/you said it once and fell down the stairs”) and Fred Thomas’ rocking and fairly self-explanatory, Good Times are Gone Again.
